We went to two different zoos. The first one was in Mulhouse.

There were some weird creatures...

Even dragons!

Zack brought back a cute souvenir.

He was pretty happy!

Tatie Stéphanie

My sister Stéphanie had taken a few days off to be with us.

She made sure we were ready for the European soccer championship that is taken place in France this year.

Her favorite player, Andre Griezmann, became the kids' favorite player too.  She chose the right player; it is thanks to him that France keeps winning.

We went to meet her cat, Gandalf. He played shy with us but we were able to see him for a little bit.

France 2016

We had fun in France again this time. Our way there was uneventful and I thought maybe from now on traveling would be ok. After flying back, I'm not so sure.

Because it was cheaper this time to fly to Paris rather than Frankfort and then Basel, we had to take two flights and two trains to get to our final destination.

We were very tired but the kids were excited to see Grand-Père, Grand-Mère and their presents :)

The next day we were already following Grand-Mère's routine. On Mondays, she goes walking with her friends and one of her sisters. They all met at the orphanage when they were teenagers. My aunt is the lady with the hat.

For our first walk we just went to the store to buy some pains au chocolat but it is a nice walk, as you can see in the above pictures. For our second Monday, we went a bit further. We crossed some fields, where Keld spotted a fox, and we arrived at a lake.

A little path behind the lake takes you to a memorial. France is, of course, full of war souvenirs. The region my mom is from, Alsace, has a particular story as it changed country many times in a few years (it was French but when France lost the war in 1870 it became German, then when Germany lost in 1918 it went back to the French but it was annexed to Germany as soon as the second world war broke out in 1939 and it stayed German until the end of the war in 1945. It's been French since). So some of my ancestors changed nationality a few times in their lifetimes and there are many stories about soldiers fighting their own family. Alsatians have always been known to prefer being French, although liking, and keeping, a lot of the German pragmatic ways, and that's why when the first world war broke out, they saw their chance of changing hands. This memorial marks the place where 8 Alsatians were killed in 1915 and 1916 because, the plaques says, they served France. The mortar shell shows what was coming to Alsatians from the adjoining town Belfort.

Because of all these wars, France is also full of bunkers and we saw some on our way back through the forest. The kids also found their new house.

We enjoyed walking in the forest, next time we'll be ready for the mountains!

School is Over

The last day of school was supposed to be June 23rd. At the beginning of the month, I volunteered for a few days to help with the book sale and I was able to take a few pictures of the kids there.

Zack had a great first year. He didn't think I should be at school with him when he first started but he has changed his mind since and will now come to me when he sees me (if he's not on the computer that is).

He built this little town with his class and was pretty proud.

Kelden was disappointed that the book sale made it impossible for his class to come get new books as he had finally reached the last reading level and was pretty proud.

The librarian let him play with an interactive book, so he was happy.
She also asked for Julia's help.

Knowing that Julia was leaving before the end of school, her teacher scheduled their bike activity early. The whole class went for a 19km bike ride (from the school to Hersey Lake). I wasn't sure she would make it but she didn't quit! (She could have, 3 did). I thought she was going to collapse though when she came back to see me at the library.

She is going to bike or walk to school next year (starting August 30th), she'll be more prepared for next time.

Happy Birthday Auntie Becca

We celebrated Auntie Becca's birthday with chocolate éclairs.

We hope she had a great day.

Happy birthday !

Ward Luau

We pretended to be in Hawaii last month. The Relief Society was in charge.

We had hula hoop and limbo contests.

I'm not sure who really won.

I took some family pictures (I have posted them on Facebook).

Aloha!

Back to the Cottage

May is definitely not the best time for the cottage. The weather is still cold and rainy and you can't take a picture without bugs photobombing.

The kids still tried to go outside.

They even went swimming. Well, Kelden did. Zack found it too cold.

This year, Keld has decided to try fishing with the kids.

Julia caught the first fish of the season.

Let's see how long it takes to catch one that we will be able to eat!
